Are You A Libertarian?
|
blog: http://Rauterkus.blogspot.com site: http://Rauterkus.com Mark Rauterkus, 45, an activist from Pittsburgh's South Side, at-large board member of the Allegheny County Libertarian Party, accepted the nomination for Pennsylvania Senate for the special election for the 42nd District expected in the spring of 2005. In 2001, Rauterkus waged a campaign for mayor, City of Pittsburgh, in a contested GOP primary. He was narrowly defeated by Dr. James Carmine, a professor from Carlow College. Rauterkus then assisted with Carmine by serving as webmaster. In 2001 Rauterkus and Carmine both spoke about the outward migration in the city and how schools play important roles in retaining residents for the city. In 2002, the Mayor's Commission on Public Education was established. Rauterkus has continually spoken against the wrongheaded directions from both the Murphy administration and city council. Rauterkus has called for the special election for the 42nd district to be held on May 17, 2005, the same day as the primary election. "With a dual election, the state saves $200,000. The reasons to hold a spcial election in either March or April pale when compared to the cost savings," said Rauterkus. Bio Notes: Rauterkus is married to Catherine V. Palmer, Ph.D., a Professor at Pitt's School of Health and Rehab Sciences and Director of Audiology at UPMC's Eye and Ear Institute. The two met in Evanston, Illinois as Catherine was in post-graduate studies at Northwestern University. The couple has two children, Erik, 10, and Grant, 7. Both play violin, attend public school at Phillips Elementary and swim on the swim team, Carlynton Swim Club. Rauterkus is one of the swim coaches for the team. Many in the Rauterkus family have had teaching and coaching roles in the city. Leo, Mark's father, is a retired Pittsburgh Public School teacher, as was his late uncle, Joseph of Steuben Street. Cousin Leo Rauterkus is head baseball coach at Langley High School. Grandfather, Joseph A. Rauterkus, Ph.D., founded the Duquesne University School of Music. Mark graduated in 1977 from Penn Hills High School and has four younger sisters. Mary Lee Majeweski, MD, and Michele Brickner, live in the north subruban areas while sisters Margie Guyer and Geri Ann McLaughlin live in eastern Pennsylvania. Rauterkus graduated from Ohio University, 1982, with a degree in journalism. He attended graduate school at Baylor Univ. in Texas and coached in six states including stints at: Harvard University, Ohio U., Baylor, Bradley Univ., Peoria Park District, New Trier. Locally Mark has coached at Plum, Fox Chapel, Green Tree, Homestead Library. Rauterkus is a retired publisher. He operated a small, independent press that developed magazines, books, software, audio and videos into the marketplace from experts for cutting-edge sports participants. He worked with many world-record breakers and olympic coaches on technical elements of sports such as water polo, volleyball, sports psychology and cycling. His publishing efforts went strictly to the internet more than ten years ago and blended into hobby endeavors. Efforts of parenting and volunteer devotions took root. He became the webmaster for his church and helped guide a youth and recreation task force with the Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network. Earlier in 2004, Rauterkus held community meetings, filmed a TV special and released a 100+ page position paper that calls for the establishement of a Pittsburgh Park District. (See Play.CLOH.Org.) "The merger talk between the city and county needs to begin to address the needs of our kids. Our children are shooting each other in the streets. Programs, rec centers, swim pools and coaching has been blown away by the ploys from the Mayor's office." Rauterkus' positions uncover different priorities. "We need to think again and enable volunteers to work within a new system that benefits all aspects within the community." |
